Functional Medicine Corner

Happy New Year Mindset community!! I’m excited for 2024 and all the growth and excitement it will bring! Especially in the coming winter months, I also want to do what I can to keep my immune system as strong and healthy as possible. This is one of many reasons why the WODs are so important to me. And this is one of my motivations to use food as (yummy!) medicine. Below are a few ways to get some important nutrients that can support and strengthen our immune systems.

Vitamin C – This helps to strengthen white blood cells so they can quickly and effectively rid the body of bacteria and viruses. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. You can get almost as much vitamin C in 1 large yellow bell pepper as from 1 cup of 100% orange juice (about 350mg). One kiwi and one cup of tomato juice can also provide about 170mg of vitamin C.

Vitamin D – This supports creation of a strong barrier to protect us from germs, as well as works to prevent over-production of inflammatory molecules when we are ill. Although it is always more efficient to get our D from the sun, one cup of mushrooms and 3 oz of several types of fish (especially rainbow trout and salmon) can provide moderate amounts of vitamin D (about 650IU).

Zinc – This nutrient helps to develop and maintain white blood cells. It helps to support healthy mucus membranes as well. Cooked oysters are the best way to supplement with food – 3 ounces provides more than 50mg! Three ounces of beef or bison, or 1 scoop of whey protein powder can also provide about 8 mg. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds as well as black beans are also great sources!

Does Juicy Leaf use organic fruits and vegetables?

What’s the difference between a juice and a smoothie?

  • The main difference is fiber. Most of the insoluble fiber is removed in the juicing process.
  • By taking the fiber out, you can pack more fruit & veggie nutrients into a juice than you can into a smoothie of the same size.
  • The lack of insoluble fiber allows your body to rapidly absorb the nutrients while expending minimal digestive effort.
  • Smoothies are made by pulverizing fruit/veggies with liquid in a blender. The insoluble fiber, which helps keep things moving through your system, is maintained in the process.

What are the benefits of juice?

  • Several servings of fruit & veg nutrition effortlessly absorbed without energy taxing digestion.
  • Easy way to incorporate more fruits and veg in diet than eating produce alone.
  • Boosts immunity and energy. Alkalizing, chronic illness prevention, helps aid in weight loss, clear skin, healthy hair.

Mindset Health Tip

The New Year always brings about reflection, goal setting and planning for the following year. So let’s clear the clutter from your mind, other people’s opinions, and heck, even the internet. Let’s establish the core fundamentals that actually matter when change is the goal.

And by the way, you don’t need a calendar date to tell you it is time for a change…  🙂

Earning success is hard — finding a way to sustain the energy and positive habits consistently over time is what will change your trajectory.

According to Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect:

Small, Smart Choices + Consistency + Time = Radical Difference

So if you are planning to make some changes for 2024, my best advice is to start with one thing.

Get consistent.

Then add another.

A very happy holiday season to all of you from Insight! Below I want to share a few options for “mocktails” over the holiday season in case there are times when you feel like drinking something that tastes fancy, without the potential for headaches or hangovers. These creative recipes are thanks to Dr. Mark Hyman, one of the leaders in functional medicine.

Cranberry Moscow Mule – With lime, cranberries, ginger and kombucha, this provides some benefit for the gut, as well as yummy flavor!

Rosemary Citrus Mocktail – Making ice cubes with pomegranate seeds in them makes orange juiced-based drinks really fancy!

Cherry Sleepy-Time Mocktail – Cherry juice, lavender and chamomile all provide benefits to promote more restful sleep, so you can enjoy this drink AND still sleep well at night.

Thanks to all who provided feedback regarding a hormone course! The responses have been incredibly helpful, and we will keep you posted in the new year as we work through developing the class.

Wishing you all the very best, and looking forward to a strong and healthy 2024!

The holidays can be an amazing time of year, but they can also be incredibly stressful. As much joy as the holiday season can bring, it is just as important to prioritize self-care as well so that we can fully enjoy all that December has to offer. I love how clearly this diagram shows the many things that can drain energy, as well as give energy. All energy takers aren’t bad – I’m looking at you, Christmas cookies. But it is important to balance energy takers with energy givers to help us stay happier, healthier and the best version of ourselves!

Mindset Health Tip

Looking for more energy and recovery after Assessment Week? Check out this great article from Precision Nutrition about optimizing your SLEEP!

A relaxing environment is essential for a good night’s rest. People sleep better when their bedroom is optimized for comfort, light, and noise and temperature.

So I challenge you to experiment and redesign your sleep area in these two ways:

  • You can transform your home into a space of serenity and inspiration just by decluttering. In addition to helping you sleep, a soothing, restful environment can lead to mental clarity. (Hello, energy you’ve been missing!)

  • Redecorate your sleep environment. Once you’ve decluttered, consider setting up your bedroom for optimal sleep. You might want to adjust:

    • Light levels and quality: Dimmed or red/orange spectrum light (as opposed to bright or blue/green-spectrum light) can help promote sleep and relaxation. For some people, a night light adds a feeling of safety, making it easier to sleep.

    • Environmental temperature: In general, body temperature drops during sleep, so having a cool environment is considered sleep-promoting. However, some folks may find warmth more relaxing, and prefer a heated blanket or warm bath before bed. Again, go with what works for you (or your client).

    • Noise (and silence) levels: Some folks need silence to sleep best. Others find background sounds—like music, storm or songbird playlists, or white noise—more relaxing.

    • Tactile stimulation: How do you feel about flannel pajamas? A fluffy cat or dog? A body pillow or stuffed animal? A weighted blanket?

Try one, and see what works for you!

Functional Medicine Corner

There is a documentary called “Common Ground” that has recently been released and is showing in selected cities currently. This film discusses the movement of regenerative agriculture, or farming practices that allow the soil to not only maintain but improve its microbial diversity and nutrient density. The film also explores the possibility that regenerative farming can support our climate in a positive way. As the lead for the documentary states, “the film explores how regenerative agriculture can help heal the soil, our health and the planet.”

In addition, the organization who made the film has created an eBook with several resources to help us support local farmers, as well as make small changes in our daily lives to help support sustainable change in food production. (You can find the link here.) This includes maps with some local farmers who support these types of practices, helpful hints on what to look for when shopping, and even further information on how to improve our own food growing practices.

For more information on the documentary and the mission, and to watch the trailer, click here. There is currently a showing scheduled in Ann Arbor for anyone interested!

Thank you to all who have completed the questionnaire regarding a hormone course! We truly appreciate your feedback! For anyone else who is interested in learning more about hormone balance, we would still love your input! Stress hormones, thyroid and female hormone balance would be topics that could be discussed. Assessment Week is HERE!!
Here are some great ways to prepare yourself:

    • Breathe! Remember you have actually been preparing for this through our programming.

    • For those of you doing this for your first time, have fun and gather baseline data. Write down your results in your folder! You will want them later!

    • Remember that none of these numbers show any value about you as a human! It is just information you can use to track your progress over time.

    • Eat nutritious food! Give your body the energy and nutrients it needs to perform and recover.

    • Drink your water people! Consider adding a pinch of salt to your water (not enough to taste).

    • Try to get to each Assessment Day once to expose yourself to the different areas of testing.

    • RING THE BELL when you achieve a personal record! Write your achievements on the board! Celebrate every single win and attempt!

    • Have FUN! CHEER on your fellow workout buddies! GIVE IT YOUR ALL!

After Assessment Week, we will work into our education regarding breath, recovery and nervous system regulation!

    Functional Medicine Corner

As we head full tilt into the crazy schedule of the holiday season, it’s important that we do our best to take care of our bodies. There are plenty of bugs and viruses being passed around right now, and avoiding getting sick is one of the best ways to fully enjoy the holidays! It is incredibly important to prioritize sleep, as well as keep moving and coming to WODS. We can also use our daily meals to support our immune system. Remember, up to 70% of the immune system is in the gut. So as much as we can counter the increased sugar intake from holiday gatherings with nutrient dense meals at home, the better our bodies will feel in December! Here are a few options to consider:

Cozy Autumn Wild Rice Soup – This soup has powerful immune supporters such as sweet potato, kale, and mushrooms. And the base can be made with bone broth, which provides essential vitamins and minerals as well as glutamine to keep your gut happy.

Immune Boosting Smoothie – Fresh fruit and leafy greens such as spinach can provide a powerful supply of vitamin C. Add a little chia seed and yogurt to balance the natural sugars with protein and fiber if you want to decrease the impact on blood glucose.

Blueberry Crisp – This is technically a dessert recipe, but this could arguably be a breakfast supplement as well. Oats provide good fiber and beta glucans to help support our gut and immune system. And blueberries are high in antioxidants, which also can provide powerful immune support. Or bring this as a healthier treat option to a party!

I’m often known as the “poop queen” here in our building, and rightfully so. ☺ I am acutely interested in gut health in every patient I see in my office, since the health of our gut influences our whole-body health. However, I also see many patients with hormonal issues – especially thyroid hormone concerns, or women with menstrual irregularities or those in perimenopause.

Often, standard approaches are singularly targeted at replacing specific hormones when they are low. Or for those of us in perimenopause, we are often told that the symptoms we are experiencing are “normal for our age”, or “just part of the process,” and there are no real options for treatment available.  However, just because many of us experience hormonal shifts and symptoms as we age, it doesn’t mean that we are powerless in changing or improving our hormone balance. In functional medicine, we have access to several tools to help address hormone balance and regain more optimal function.

When addressing hormones generally, it is impossible to look at just thyroid or sex hormones alone. I consider our three major hormone producing glands – our adrenal glands (which produce cortisol), our thyroid gland, and our ovaries or testes – as members of a team. When they are all functioning normally, the system runs beautifully, much like a well-coached and experienced soccer club or volleyball team. This is because they all work together to support our body.

However, when one of the hormone systems has a shift in function for an extended period, this can upset that balance and contribute to significant shifts in other hormones as the body tries to accommodate. Therefore, looking at or addressing only one system can often lead to continued imbalance and a lack of significant symptom resolution.

Hormone balance and how to approach it is a complex topic, but one that is well-worth addressing for those who are significantly affected. We are considering offering a mini-course on hormones in 2024 for anyone who is interested in digging into this topic more. Watch for a questionnaire in next week’s newsletter – I would greatly appreciate it if anyone who is interested would complete the short questionnaire so we can tailor a course to the needs of our community! Or feel free to approach me in the gym or at the clinic if you have thoughts or questions.

    Mindset Health Tip

How often do you feel “ready” in life?

I have always felt that I can do more, no matter what I am faced with. However, I am never completely ready for anything. But this hasn’t stopped me from taking the first step and pursuing my dreams.

    Never has, and never will.

Sometimes I failed, but most of the time, despite not being “ready,” I took the first step and reached my goals. Big and small.

Whether it was an exam or a life-changing event, I knew one thing — there is no such thing as the right moment or being 100% ready.

You can always do more, learn more, prepare more…or wait for a better time.

But eventually, you’ll have to take the first step.

Otherwise, you’ll end up spending your entire life waiting for the perfect opportunity, without actually experiencing it.

And that’s the risk of waiting until you are ready.

    Functional Medicine Corner

Happy Thanksgiving week! It’s that time when we work to focus on gratitude as we celebrate with friends and family. I recently heard a podcast done by “The Hidden Brain” titled “The Enemies of Gratitude”, and it focuses on why it can be so hard to be grateful on a regular basis.

So many of us in this community have so much to be grateful for – the fact that we have food on our plate, a roof over our head, a community of people such as this one that supports us. However, when these things happen day after day, on repeat, it becomes normal and expected. Yet, if we have car trouble, or dinner gets burned, these are new experiences that can really affect our mood and approach to the day. The psychologist on this podcast likens this to tailwinds versus headwinds. When we are running, canoeing, or biking and we have a tailwind, we often appreciate it…for about 10-20 seconds or so. And then it becomes normal. However, when we are working against headwinds, we don’t ever tend to forget that we are fighting against nature, no matter how long it lasts.

Of course, we can and should be affected by the adverse events in our life, but research also shows that working to find gratitude daily for the blessings that we take for granted has some amazing benefits for us as well. When we are more grateful, we tend to be more generous toward others. Research shows that gratitude helps to improve sleep as well as other health parameters such as blood pressure. It improves our relationships – if we focus on what we love about our partner or family members more often, the annoyances and aggravations take less of a toll.

Being grateful helps to bring out our best self. So work on taking even a few minutes every day to focus on and embrace the feeling of gratitude. And if you get a chance, take some time to listen to the podcast to learn more about the importance and difficulties surrounding gratitude.

    Health Tip

Your alarm clock goes off. You have two choices. Wake up or hit snooze…

So how do YOU make that decision?

If you make your decision based on EMOTIONS and how you FEEL, you likely won’t get out of bed.

If you make your decision based on your CONVICTIONS and GOALS, you will be more likely to get out of that bed!

How do YOU make your decisions?

    Functional Medicine Corner

Fiber–we all know that it helps keep our bowels moving regularly. And that alone is an excellent reason to make sure it is included in our diet. However, fiber also works with hormones in our body to help us feel fuller longer. This then helps decrease cravings and helps us moderate our appetite more easily.

What kind of fiber helps decrease hunger the most? Fermentable or soluble fibers are the ones we especially want to focus on. Whole grain barley, oats and rye are great sources. But you can also get them in beans, peas and lentils. Even apples, pears and green bananas have pectin, which serves as a sustaining fiber source.

Read this article if you want to nerd out and learn more about the science behind this benefit of fiber.

Please help us welcome our new staff members!

    Office Manager: Sheenica Fields

Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Sheenica later moved to Dallas, Texas after completing her high school education. She successfully obtained her associate and Bachelor’s degrees from Strayer University. Eager to expand her knowledge and skills, she pursued her MBA in Business with a focus on Healthcare Administration from the esteemed Jack Welch Management Institute, a prestigious online business school. She also attended Western Michigan University, where she specialized in Nursing Home Administration and earned a certificate in the field. Currently, Sheenica is pursuing her studies at Liberty University, with the goal of becoming a clinical mental health counselor.

Outside of her professional life, Sheenica dedicates her free time to volunteering as a soccer coach for AYSO, working with children aged 11-14. Cooking, singing, drawing, and solving puzzles are among her favorite hobbies. She is also the proud owner of two Holland Lop bunnies. Above all, Sheenica treasures the precious moments spent with her wonderful children and her loving partner.

    Gym Coach: Meg Niedzwiecki, PTA

Meg is a Portage native and earned her Physical Therapist Assistant degree from Kellogg Community College in 2022. She is passionate about exercise, sports, and helping people reach their highest potential. In her free time you can find her fishing, enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with her dog and fiancé.

Meg was a member of the gym before pursing her career and she is beyond excited to be back at her favorite place with the most amazing members!

Gym Coach: Patrick Fowler, NASM CPT, CNC, VCS

Patrick Harrison Fowler was born and raised in Vicksburg, Michigan. Patrick was raised competing in year-round sports, and in his early teen years became hooked with running and resistance training. This passion led to a fascination with researching and accumulating knowledge of exercise science, nutrition, and physio-mechanics and inspired Patrick to pursue his certifications for personal training and nutrition coaching.

Starting as an outlet and ending as a purpose, Patrick’s passion for health and fitness can best be attributed to the improvements it made for his life and wanting to help others achieve these same improvements. He currently competes in ultra-endurance trail running with the end goal of seeing how far he can push himself in this domain. Outside of work and working out, Patrick enjoys singing, plays guitar and drums with the hopes of learning more instruments, spends lots of time with his dog, and likes to read a variety of different genres of books.

Our awesome Cassidi is going to be leaving Mindset to pursue her love of movement and fitness at her new women-only studio in Portage.

Her last day with us will be Monday November 13th for the AM WODs! So come give your hugs and well wishes as she spreads her wings on this new endeavor!

The Annual Tree Lighting event returns to Texas Corners! And this year they’re adding a new holiday tradition—a Makers’ Market Art Fair! They will have 20+ artists, craftspeople, and sweet treat makers selling their wares in the Pavilion, along with special musical guest Lana Hoffman, a silent auction and hot libations (cocoa, cider, coffee) to help keep you toasty.

This is a perfect opportunity for you to get a head start on your Holiday shopping! Some of the local businesses in the “Four Corners” will be participating by providing special offers either in the pavilion or on-site. Come out and see all the great opportunities.

We donated a 3-month membership to the Silent Auction FYI!

    Health Tip

Many of us prolong or postpone the initiation of change until we are “ready” but that “ready” state usually never comes.

I want you to note that those are both FEELINGS and EMOTIONS. Feelings and emotions vary and change frequently, and are affected by many factors.

Making decisions and priorities based on how you FEEL will derail your progress and advancement every time. Instead, consider making decisions based on YOUR VALUES and GOALS!

HERE is a great video to help you learn more about this!

Next week, we will talk about your alarm clock…

    Functional Medicine Corner

It’s “fall back” time! And as much as I love getting an extra hour tonight, I know many of us still struggle to maximize that time and get a restful night’s sleep. As we continue to discuss how to moderate stress in our lives, sleep is an important tool in helping to decrease the negative effects of stress on our body.  Today I want to discuss a few tips on how to work to optimize our sleep.

    • Decrease artificial light by using filters on our computers and phones to decrease blue light exposure, or even better, choose non-screen activities for an hour or so before bed while keeping lights low. Falling asleep with a good book is the best!
    • Limit alcohol and heavy meals before bed regularly. But also know that healthy carbs at dinner can increase tryptophan, which can help induce sleepiness. Drinking warm herbal tea can also help calm the body.
    • Work out – just not right before bed. 😉 Our bodies are meant to move, regularly. And doing so will provide more physical exhaustion by the end of the day.
    • Seek out natural light during the day, as much as possible. Sunlight exposure during the day can help regulate sleep/wake cycles more naturally. If you need to be indoors, consider a lamp such as these.
    • Consider magnesium, especially magnesium taurate. Taking this with dinner can help induce relaxation as well as better sleep. It can also help to decrease restless legs symptoms!

A quick note for those who are taking or have tried melatonin. Harvard researchers discovered years ago that melatonin is often most effective when taken at low doses such as 0.5 mg to 1.5 mg, and when taken 2-3 hours before bed. This helps to induce the body’s own production of melatonin over the next couple of hours, so sleep comes more easily once your head hits the pillow.

So sleep well tonight Mindset community!

    Community Partners

Green Box: The Farmers’ Market in a Box from Of the Land!

Of the Land is a family and community farm that believes in the power of food and the beauty in sharing the nature that is around us. They provide organic faire, catering, and one of a kind wedding and event experiences. (And it is run by some pretty incredible human beings–Bridgett and Trent Blough!)

One of the great services Of the Land offers is their Green Box–otherwise referred to as the “Farmers’ Market in a Box!” The Green Box is a way to source locally grown produce, meats, eggs, dairy, kitchen staples, complete meals, and much more–all from the Of the Land farm and other local farmers, artisans and producers!

You can access the green box via the virtual marketplace here! In the growing season, they offer weekly and bi-weekly subscriptions–you can also do a one-time order as long as you have an order of at least $35!

Here is a great video to learn more about Of the Land and Green Box!

Come check them out at our office or at their downtown location!

    JUICYLEAF

Another AMAZING partnership we are bringing to you is our very own local juicer – JuicyLeaf!

Come check them out at our office or at their downtown location or schedule a pick up at Mindset every Tuesday from 3-7pm!

**Place your orders before NOON on SUNDAYS**

    Health Tip

Now that you know humans are meant to interact to stimulus, how do you master your ability to respond? Consider the term “Emotional Agility.” This is defined as the ability to be flexible with thoughts and feelings in order to have an optimal response to the many different situations you find yourself in every day.

Defining emotional agility isn’t difficult, but putting it into practice is more complicated!

HERE is a 2-minute video about what it is and a few short strategies for building this skill.

    • Recognize emotions

    • Accept your emotions

    • BUT ACT ON YOUR VALUES

All of this feeds into the complex world of taking control of your life, advancing your personal experience, and therefore optimizing your physiology!

    Functional Medicine Corner

As we continue to focus on addressing stress at our WODs, I wanted to share one of my favorite phone apps for meditation, increased focus, or relaxation. Insight Timer is available at the Apple and Google app stores, and it is free! (There is an option to pay for added features, but there is plenty available without investing anything).

The app has several guided meditations, especially related to breath work, lasting anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour or more. In addition, there are several music tracks that can help to improve focus, serve as a basis for meditations, or just serve as a background for relaxation. There is an entire section dedicated to sleep as well! Check it out – this is one of my favorite tools when I need even just a few minutes to recenter.
