As we discussed last week, the vegan diet has gained much popularity over the years, and research shows that it can provide significant health benefits for many. However, in touting the benefits of eating plants, there have also been some who claim that eating any animal products will only lead to poorer health parameters.  Animal-based trans fats are one nutrient that has been villainized recently. However, research suggests a different story.

Research is crystal clear on artificial, or man-made trans-fats, and the fact that these can lead to inflammation as well as an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and cancer. However, animal-based trans fats such as CLA have also been researched extensively. Multiple studies on these natural trans fats strongly suggest that ingestion either has no effect, or even provides some protection against heart disease.

In addition, research suggests that there is an inverse association between diabetes risk and levels of CLA in the tissue, as it helps to improve insulin sensitivity in the tissues. CLA has also been shown to increase lean body mass by increasing breakdown and reducing storage of body fat.

Although CLA is found in many meat products, it is highest in grass-fed meat and grass-fed dairy products. Just like we are what we eat, so are the animals we ingest. And feeding the animals what they are evolutionarily made to eat significantly changes the health profile. Therefore, focusing on ingesting animals that are raised traditionally can alter health parameters alone. Our health is affected by what we eat, so it makes sense that the animal products we ingest are no different.

Does Juicy Leaf use organic fruits and vegetables?

What’s the difference between a juice and a smoothie?

  • The main difference is fiber. Most of the insoluble fiber is removed in the juicing process.
  • By taking the fiber out, you can pack more fruit & veggie nutrients into a juice than you can into a smoothie of the same size.
  • The lack of insoluble fiber allows your body to rapidly absorb the nutrients while expending minimal digestive effort.
  • Smoothies are made by pulverizing fruit/veggies with liquid in a blender. The insoluble fiber, which helps keep things moving through your system, is maintained in the process.

What are the benefits of juice?

  • Several servings of fruit & veg nutrition effortlessly absorbed without energy taxing digestion.
  • Easy way to incorporate more fruits and veg in diet than eating produce alone.
  • Boosts immunity and energy. Alkalizing, chronic illness prevention, helps aid in weight loss, clear skin, healthy hair.

Dr. Ellen: Power Week is coming January 29th!

You: What the heck is Power Week?!?!?!?

Dr. Ellen: That is a great question! Are you working on your strength? Do you like feeling like an Amazon or Jack Reacher? Are you trying to focus on lean mass development or maintenance?

You: Heck yes! Absolutely!

Dr. Ellen: Well good because Power Week is all about learning how to use your body to generate POWER.

You: Okay, that sounds awesome but makes me nervous!

Dr. Ellen: Totally understandable! The goal of the week is to explore loading your body in a slow and safe manner. Your coaches are here to help you find the balance between challenge and safety.

You: Okay, that makes sense. I do trust the coaches and I am curious about what I can do.

Dr. Ellen: That is awesome! Curiosity is a perfect way to approach the week! Also remember that you will want to focus on energy and recovery for the week so make sure you are fueling your body with real food (none of that processed junk) and prioritizing quality sleep.

You: Sounds like fun! Let’s do this!

Dr. Ellen: YES – LET’S DO THIS! Be Curious, Not Judgmental about yourself.

Functional Medicine Corner

The vegan diet has become increasingly popular over the past few years, partly due to Netflix shows such as “Forks Over Knives”, “The Game Changers” and “What the Health”. There are many experts who make it seem that the only way to obtain optimal health and save the planet is to ditch all animal-based products. Do we need to be a vegan to be healthy?

We as individuals are genetically, physiologically, and emotionally different. Therefore, my first and easiest answer is – if we are all so individually unique, why should we all require the exact same diet to optimally sustain us? I truly believe (and there is evidence to suggest) that for some a vegan diet can improve health and vitality significantly. For those, a vegan lifestyle is a clear best choice. I also have several patients who, after adopting a vegan diet to try to optimize health, still have chronic symptoms and health concerns with no improvement in blood markers or vital signs. They are confused and defeated – but they didn’t do anything wrong, and they aren’t broken.

In the coming weeks, we will discuss several considerations to keep in mind as we evaluate the “vegan diet is the optimal diet” argument. But let’s start with this first consideration. Traditionally and historically, before commercial food processing, there was tremendous variation in what humans thrived on. This included:

  • High meat and fat diets of the Inuit in Siberia, with virtually no incidence of heart disease.

  • Heavily vegetarian fair in India’s native population, with no evidence of muscle loss.

  • Significant seasonal dietary variation in the Hadza of Tanzania, varying from meat- to plant-focused depending on weather and availability.

Maybe there is more to consider than just “plant” versus “animal”…

Making mistakes might just be the main key to learning! Recent neurological research on the brain shows what happens when we make mistakes.

Surprisingly, the research tells us that making a mistake is actually a good thing!

Mistakes are not only opportunities for learning, but also a time when our brains grow.

A recent report has shown that water in plastic bottles contains approximately 240,000 plastic fragments – this is 10 to 100 times greater than previous estimates. So, why is this a concern? Why should we care about microplastics in water anyway?

Plastics generally have a number of chemical components in them. This includes phthalates, bisphenols like BPA, and PFC’s. When they enter our body, they become “endocrine disruptors”, interrupting hormone signaling in the body. This can lead to immune system effects, as well as change development in our kids, and lead to reproductive and neurologic dysfunction. And this just addresses what we do know – scientists are still trying to determine all the effects these microplastics have in our system.

It is impossible to avoid all plastics today, so I’m not advocating for hypervigilance about every possible exposure. However, knowing that frequent or significant exposure to plastic can impact our health allows us to consider how and when we can make choices to decrease exposure. This can include:

  • Drinking filtered water from stainless steel, glass or ceramic containers.

  • Avoiding using plastic containers when reheating food in the microwave.

  • Using reusable wax wraps for packed lunches, rather than plastic bags.

  • Throwing away any plastic reusable food containers that are scuffed or damaged – these leach even more plastic.

  • Consider buying glass containers to store left-overs – especially if they are warm.

Stay safe and warm this weekend, and enjoy the winter wonderland!

Mindset Health Tip

The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways, gratitude encompasses all of these meanings.

Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, we can acknowledge the goodness in our lives.

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

People feel and express gratitude in multiple ways. They can apply it to the past (retrieving positive memories and being thankful for elements of childhood or past blessings), the present (not taking good fortune for granted as it comes), and the future (maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude).

Regardless of the inherent or current level of someone’s gratitude, it’s a quality that individuals can successfully cultivate further. So I challenge you to write down three things you are grateful for each day this week. Make it a practice and see what happens!

Functional Medicine Corner

In my practice, and in functional medicine generally, one of our very first goals is improving or optimizing gut health. This is partly because around 70% of the immune system is in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, or GALT for short. In order to keep our immune system working optimally to control inflammation as well as protect from infections, focusing on the good bacteria inside the gut as well as digestion is crucial.

A recently released study demonstrated this importance clearly. Scientists studied specific beneficial bacteria and whether they could fend off certain bacteria such as klebsiella (which causes pneumonia) and salmonella (GI infection) from developing into a full-blown illness. When testing good microbes individually, it was found that although there was some benefit, they weren’t effective at preventing infection by themselves. However, when scientists used ten different strains of beneficial bacteria together, protection against infection was strong. Pooling 50 different species together was even better!

This confirms that a diverse microbiome can help to support our health in a number of ways, one of which is specifically helping to combat bad bugs. How do we do that? Probiotic foods and beverages such as sauerkraut, yogurt and kombucha, as well as fiber-containing grains and plants are a great start! Feel free to reach out if you have other questions about how to optimize your gut health!

Functional Medicine Corner

Happy New Year Mindset community!! I’m excited for 2024 and all the growth and excitement it will bring! Especially in the coming winter months, I also want to do what I can to keep my immune system as strong and healthy as possible. This is one of many reasons why the WODs are so important to me. And this is one of my motivations to use food as (yummy!) medicine. Below are a few ways to get some important nutrients that can support and strengthen our immune systems.

Vitamin C – This helps to strengthen white blood cells so they can quickly and effectively rid the body of bacteria and viruses. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. You can get almost as much vitamin C in 1 large yellow bell pepper as from 1 cup of 100% orange juice (about 350mg). One kiwi and one cup of tomato juice can also provide about 170mg of vitamin C.

Vitamin D – This supports creation of a strong barrier to protect us from germs, as well as works to prevent over-production of inflammatory molecules when we are ill. Although it is always more efficient to get our D from the sun, one cup of mushrooms and 3 oz of several types of fish (especially rainbow trout and salmon) can provide moderate amounts of vitamin D (about 650IU).

Zinc – This nutrient helps to develop and maintain white blood cells. It helps to support healthy mucus membranes as well. Cooked oysters are the best way to supplement with food – 3 ounces provides more than 50mg! Three ounces of beef or bison, or 1 scoop of whey protein powder can also provide about 8 mg. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds as well as black beans are also great sources!

The New Year always brings about reflection, goal setting and planning for the following year. So let’s clear the clutter from your mind, other people’s opinions, and heck, even the internet. Let’s establish the core fundamentals that actually matter when change is the goal.

Earning success is hard — finding a way to sustain the energy and positive habits consistently over time is what will change your trajectory.

Rosemary Citrus Mocktail – Making ice cubes with pomegranate seeds in them makes orange juiced-based drinks really fancy!

Cherry Sleepy-Time Mocktail – Cherry juice, lavender and chamomile all provide benefits to promote more restful sleep, so you can enjoy this drink AND still sleep well at night.

Thanks to all who provided feedback regarding a hormone course! The responses have been incredibly helpful, and we will keep you posted in the new year as we work through developing the class.

Wishing you all the very best, and looking forward to a strong and healthy 2024!
